Motorcycle title/bill of sale, in South Carolina?

I am buying a motorcycle off a friend of mine. I trust him. He doesn’t have the original title, and he is having a difficult time with the previous lein company. He is dealing with that on his end when he gets a chance, he is gone alot. What i want to know, is can we go ahead and do up a bill of sale instead, i can use that to get the insurance, registration and stuff from the DMV. I think i read online that the DMV will issue a duplicate title with a bill of sale anyway? Whenever the title does come, then that can be signed over too i suppose. thanks for looking.

What year is the motorcycle? All states are different, but in Georgia the last registered owner has to apply for a duplicate title. The bill of sale doesnt do any good unless the motorcycle is old. If the previous owner is still showing a lien on record then he will have to get a lien release from the lienholder and take that into the DMV and get a duplicate title and sign that over to you. Bill of sales arent legal ownership documents.
I know that he is gone a lot. But when he is not gone, both of you go to the DMV and the clerk at the window will tell you everything you need to do to buy it today. A supervisor may do the duplicate title while you wait. You can read about the lien at that time. It might take only 5 minutes at the window. Do not go there without your friend. Do not go there with a Bill of Sale and no friend..
